Doshis ‘The Deliverer’ is set in Kerala in a centre designed to help the children that have been rejected by society due to their gender, deformities and skin. The immorality of the scene depicted by the description of ‘naked in the streets’ and ‘stuffed’ into bags (referring to children) creates the semantic field of carelessness. These terms insinuate children are regarded as property not a living being deserving of care and love. This is reinforced by the dog that thinks the children are ‘bone or wood’ implying children are seen as an expendable and useless resource by parents unless they provide financial or societal benefit (male or fully able). A contrasting tone is shown within ‘Caitrin’ as the metaphor of ‘tight red rope of love’ (actually an umbilical cord) is used to convey the immediate and vehement emotional connection between the mother and the child. The use of ‘tight’ suggests th e mother is immediately protective over her child, and Clarke uses enjambment in order to isolate this word at the end of a line emphasising its emotive impact. This contrasts with the objectification of children within ‘The Deliverer’ highlighting the social differences how the value of life is considered. The fact the child was buried alive acts as a metaphor for how those considered inferior are at the bottom of society and seen as ‘dirt’. This links to the compassionless tone within the first three stanzas reflecting the lack of empathy shown by mothers and fathers, as they are ‘collect[ed]’ much like a useless commodity found in abundance contrasting the Western ideal of children. The title in itself has a double meaning as the deliverer could also be delivery from God highlighting how desperate the children are for some form of salvation which is shown to be provided by the American family in the fourth stanza. Additionally, the imagery of ‘waiting at the gates’ implies this is heaven to the child and they are the ‘Gods’ further inferring they had the ability to choose life or death for the child. The part in Milwaukee Airport draws many parallels to ‘Caitrin’ as the parents are entirely focused in the child and it i s described as a ‘ceremony’ which implies childbirth/children are respected and given care, as shown within ‘Caitrin’ when the mother speaks of ‘tender[nes]’and ‘love’ creating a semantic field of care, much like in the stanzas five to eight. In ‘Caitrin’ the entire poem centres around the struggle of birth and the child whereas in ‘The Deliverer’ the childbirth is trivialised by placing it a single line and talking about it in a blasà © manner – ‘body slither out from body’. The repetition of ‘body’ and its equivocal meaning of either being dead or the scientific term for our self-dehumanises both the child and the woman suggesting they are regarded by society as simply a vessel to produce babies. The adjective ‘slither’ implies the action was committed with ease whereas the use of ‘struggle’ in ‘Caitrin’ suggests it was a hard task. This shows the stark contrast between the approach towards childbirth as ‘slither’ suggests it is a frequent occurrence whereas ‘struggle’ implies the act of childbirth is a considered decision both from an economical perspective and physical reinforcing the difference between western and Indian society. The contrast between the two realities is immediately shown in the fourth stanza when the Americans are described as doing ‘things right’. The connotations of ‘right’ are integral to the meaning of the poem as the morality of the Americans is emphasised by the use of ‘right’ and it reinforces the dramatic difference between the societies. The description of Kerala has no personal pronouns dehumanising the children whereas in the USA they repeate dly use ‘her’ implying she is more valued in this new world. The use of ‘touched’ and ‘crying’ creates a contrasting semantic field of care and emotive attachment, demonstrating how Doshi is insinuating women have the ability to create emotional attachments (in America) to children due to their privileged and ‘traditional’ lifestyle. The writer creates a theme of acceptance of this immorality In Kerala through the lack of emotive language and trivialisation of new life (‘covered in garbage’ and ‘tossed’) and combining this with the fact it is written from the perspective of a woman you could argue the writer is highlighting through literary devices that women in Kerala are disenfranchised by their society due to submission to men. This is shown by the fact after producing a child who is considered undesirable they simply ‘lie down for their men again’. The use of ‘lie down’ and ho w it suggests she is physically lower acts as a metaphor for women’s standing in society and how they are considered inferior. The fact that in ‘Caitrin’ gender is not discussed once implies that in this more socially advanced society woman and men are both considered of equal worth. Reinforcing this the child is described as ‘defiant’ implying within this world people go against societal expectations and forge their own path as opposed to lying down and surmising to the patriarchy. There is an overbearing tone of entrapment of women due to economic pressure is displayed throughout as they are forced into immorality due to economic issues and these issues are a product of male dominance (‘lie’). Ambiguity is also prevalent as the term ‘collect’ has a double meaning of accumulation whilst also dehumanising the children to objects. This reiterates the vague morals of society and how they are twisted. In addition to this it reflects the tumultuous nature of their existence. This contrasts starkly with ‘Caitrin’ which highlights how the woman is fr ee once the baby and mother become ‘separate’ implying they are more revered within their society. The consistent three-line stanzas in ‘The Deliverer’ is also used to convey the cyclical and perpetual nature of childbirth and how women are subject to this. This is contrasted by the two separate stanzas which highlight how childbirth is an infrequent carefully considered decision not forced upon the women. Both poems are heavily influenced by the societies in which they are set. ‘The Deliverer’ attempts to convey the dramatic difference through very apparent volta placed at the point where the writer begins to describe American society. How the ‘clean’ and ‘disinfected room’ in ‘Caitlin’ appears so different to the ‘desolate hut’ in ‘The Deliverer’, showing the different societies perceptions and approaches to childbirth through physical environments.

James asks Rachel nervously, "will you call the cops on me?" Rachel responds No I will not. Now let clean this mess up." James runs to the bathroom in a hurry scrambling for towels and alcohol to clean up the stains on the wooden floor. James yells from the room " I CAN NOT FIND THE ALCOHOL" Rachel then bursts towards the hallway closet and finds the alcohol on the second shelf next to some rubber gloves. Now since Rachel has found the alcohol she rushes to the bath room and tells him that she has found it. They both rush back towards the dead body James starts to pick up the body and Rachel stops him and says "there are gloves in the closet go get them so your finger print will not be on the body." James agrees and goes to the closet. As he is going to the closet he starts to hear a car engine pulling into the drive way he then panics and grabs the gloves and rushes to put them on (they are not all the way on). Goes back to the body and picks him up and takes the body towards his car in the backyard, when he gets to the car Rachel pops the trunk and James throws the dead body in there roughly. Then James and Rachel hop in the car and drives off fast. The people who where in the car that pulled in the drive way walked in the house and sees blood on the floor and storms through the house looking for there dad and they can not find so they call 911. Eventually 911 comes to the house and the family tells them what had happened. The officer calls it in and now they have several cops in the area looking for anything suspicious. While an officer is a making is routine route through a neighborhood a couple block away he sees a speeding vehicle rides down a Main Street. The officer quickly turns on his lights and pulls James over. As the officer approaches up to the vehicle, he sees the bottom of James's hand and sees blood and questions him and James says "it's is paint, I was painting with my daughter earlier officer." So the officer believes Him and walked back to his car to make a ticket for James, while he is writing the ticket the dispatch comes on the radio and tell him about the murder that happened just a couple minutes ago. The officer quickly realizes it is the James and gets out the car and pulls his gun out and tell James and Rachel to exit the vehicle with there hands up. They both follow the officer orders and they both get arrested on sight. Later on they where both taken down to the jail investigators where questioning Rachel harder the James because they knew she would squeal.. Only after 10 minutes in the room Rachel told them everything she knew and that gave the officers clear view to arrest the both. The next Monday they went on trial and they both got 12 years.

Combating Compassion Fatigue Essays Combating Compassion Fatigue Paper Combating Compassion Fatigue Paper Compassion is an essential attribute that nurses must posses in order to provide appropriate care to the patients and families they come in contact with. Nurses work many long shifts taking care of sick patients and grieving families, and may not take the time to care for their physical, emotional and spiritual needs properly. After a while, the long hours and stress may catch up with them and cause compassion fatigue or even burnout. Nurses must learn to care for themselves first and foremost in order to be healthy, happy and spiritually sound, and this in turns allows them to provide great care to their patients as well as their own family. The purpose of this paper is to identify the warning signs of compassion fatigue, explain the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the caregiver and share examples of coping strategies and resources for nurses. Compassion fatigue â€Å"is characterized by deep physical and emotional exhaustion and a pronounced change in the helper’s ability to feel empathy for their patients, their loved ones and their co-workers†(Mathieu, 2007). When a nurse experiences this type of fatigue, it is important to be aware of what is happening because their current state must be addressed and dealt with in order to prevent further complications. Compassion fatigue â€Å"is marked by increased cynicism at work, a loss of enjoyment of our career, and eventually can transform into depression, secondary traumatic stress and stress-related illnesses†(Mathieu, 2007). The Cleveland Clinic (2009) states that â€Å"caregiver burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion that may be accompanied by a change in attitude from positive and caring to negative and unconcerned. † Burnout happens when a nurse focuses to much on meeting the demands of the job and less on taking care of the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of oneself. Caregiver burnout not only happens to nurses and health care provides, but to family members that are taking care of a loved one as well. Warning Signs of Compassion Fatigue There are a number of warning signs for compassion fatigue, but each person will develop different signs unique to their situation. Some of the signs include exhaustion, reduced ability to feel sympathy and empathy, dread of working with certain patients, diminished sense of enjoyment of nursing, and difficulty of separating work life from personal life. When a caregiver experiences compassion fatigue, they typically will go through five stages including the idealistic phase, the irritability phase, the withdraw phase, the zombie phase and the pathology and victimization or maturation and renewal. Each phase has unique characteristics that the caregiver will exhibit. The characteristics of the first phase or the idealistic phase is normal and how a caregiver should feel including being motivated and ready to solve problems, a desire to make a difference, volunteer to assist and full of energy and enthusiasm. The second phase or the irritability phase begins when the caregiver starts to cut corners, avoid patients, being to disregard their own wellness, lose focus and start distancing themselves from friends and family. The withdraw phase is the third phase and this begins when the nurse starts to lose patience with the patient, neglects oneself and others, has chronic fatigue and views them self as the victim. The next phase is the zombie phase which is characterized by being easily angry, dislike of others, loss of sense of humor and personality and seeing others as incompetent. The last phase can be when the caregiver either chooses pathology and victimization or maturation and renewal. Either the nurse becomes to overwhelmed to deal with the situation and decides to change profession or develops a physical illness or the caregiver takes time to seek help and take care of the issue at hand and continues providing care for others. Needs of the Caregiver Nursing and other caregivers must understand the importance of taking care of themselves physically, emotionally and spiritually. Providing the best care to patients includes taking care of oneself. Physical health includes a healthy diet, exercise and getting enough rest and relaxation. Without these three crucial things â€Å"the body rebels with decreased immunity to common illnesses† (GCU, 2011). No only does the health care provider need to preserve good physical health, but â€Å"it is about being present with one’s feelings, sensations and intuitive guidance in order to detect what is best in any given moment† (Portnoy, 2011). Emotional health is an individuals over all well being and how a persons feels about them self. Emotionally healthy individuals are able to manage their feeling easily, balance work and home life and feel a sense of satisfaction. â€Å"People with good emotional health have an ability to bounce back from adversity, trauma, and stress†(Smith, Segal Segal, 2013), this is called resilience. Each person is different and may require different methods of dealing with emotional stress, the important thing is to establish the method that works for the individual and maintain that in order to restore emotional health. Being spiritually healthy is highly relevant to the wellness of a health care provider because this gives them meaning to life and what they do. â€Å"Just as the physical body needs rest, recuperation, and healthy nutrition, the soul need time for spiritual restoration, encouragement, and faith-building†(GCU, 2011). Spirituality may consist of praying, reading the bible or attending church, and will vary with each individual, but whats most important is to remain spiritually sound in order to cope with daily stresses and provide care with compassion and consideration. Coping Strategies The best way to cope with compassion fatigue is to prevent it by knowing the warning signs, but there are also coping strategies that can effectively help health care providers overcome it. Recognizing and acknowledging the sign and symptoms is the first step in conquering compassion fatigue. Next the symptoms need to be addressed so that the person can understand them and why it is happening. There may also be internal conflict that needs to be evaluated. Finding some sort of support to help the individual through this time and being able to talk about what their needs are can help with overcoming the fatigue. If this does not help the person cope with the situation at hand, professional help may need to be considered to treat their compassion fatigue. Again, this is where physical, emotional and spiritual health are very important. Being physically, emotionally and spiritually intact will contribute to an easier recovery or possibly avoidance of compassion fatigue and even burnout. Knowing the resources that are available to nurses and health care providers for compassion fatigue is key to helping them restore themselves. Health care facilities should provide some type of programs that focus on fighting compassion fatigue and burnout. If an individual is suffering from compassion fatigue and having a hard time coping they may need to be seen by a doctor to address the severity and need for further counseling. A health care worker should be aware of the warning signs of compassion fatigue in order to circumvent the problems that it triggers.
